What is an issue?

An issue can be any problem or topic in society that relates to government or politics that needs to be addressed.

In the prototype, if you are logged in, you can suggest an issue by clicking on "Issues" in the sidebar, then the "NEW+" or just "+" button on the right hand side (see image). NewVote will then check that your suggested issue is appropriate for the app ie. that it is not offensive and that it relates to government or politics. You are able to include an information summary and picture for the issue when making a suggestion.

In the future, you will have the ability to post an issue with crowd moderation taking place. What crowd moderation typically means is that the suggested issue is sent to 5% of users to "vet" the issue, prior to it going public on the app.

In the future, the information summary will be a publically editable wiki (like Wikipedia) so that it will benefit from the "thousand eyes" effect and no one can accuse NewVote of having an agenda.

What is a goal?

A goal is the objective that you think society should have in relation to the issue - the end point that you want society eventually to achieve. Having goals allows NewVote to crowdsource the values that are to be taken into account in addressing issues.

The same goal can be linked to more than one issue. Goals should be written in general language, allowing for various, more precise solutions to fall under them.

Goals are one of the results that decision makers can take into account when making changes to law, policy and practice.

In the prototype, if you are logged in, you can suggest a goal by navigating to the relevant issue and clicking the "NEW+" or just "+" button on the right hand side (see image). NewVote will then check that it is appropriate ie. that it is not offensive material and that it relates to the issue. You are able to include a short summary and a picture for the goal.

In the future, you will have the ability to post a solution with crowd moderation taking place.

What is a solution?

Solutions fall under goals and the same solution can be linked to more than one goal. Solutions should be specific.

Solutions are one of the results that decision makers can take into account when making changes to law, policy and practice.

In the prototype, if you are logged in, you can suggest a solution by navigating to the relevant goal and clicking the "NEW+" or just "+" button on the right hand side (see image). What is Pol.Is?

Pol.Is is a third party app that we have integrated into our prototype. Pol.Is allows you to agree or disagree with statements then displays where you stand compared to the other respondents in a graph.

To use Pol.Is, start by clicking Agree, Disagree or Pass/Unsure to the comments. If you complete this process and notice that your perspective did not yet exist, you can add your own perspective.

You can then explore the beliefs of each group and the "Majority Opinion", views widely held by all users. This helps to establish points of consensus so that points of difference can be more easily identified.

What is an endorsement?

Organisations such as community groups, specialised non-profits, think tanks, political parties and so on may create an organisation account.

These accounts do not have the power to vote, but instead can 'endorse' a goal or solution, providing their reasons for doing so.

The reason for this is so that users can know where trusted organisations within the community stand on the issue and why.
